The reception of Diophantine problems in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Classical Age
Organisation : Eleonora Sammarchi (Université Paris Diderot, SPHERE)

The large collection of problems (determinate and indeterminate) contained in the book The Arithmetica of the Greek mathematician Diophantus (3rd century) was the subject of several interpretations over the centuries. The text was translated into Arabic under the title The Art of the algebra of Diophantus by Qusta ibn Luqa at the end of the ninth century. He then circulate in Latin, translated from the Greek. It will be essential for the research algebraists interested in the relationship between algebra and arithmetic.

In this session we propose to better understand how the analysis of Diophantus was received and reinterpreted by mathematicians successive epochs. We will analyze some cases of specific figure, from different historical and geographical contexts, such as the Arab theorists algebraic calculation, the Italian algebraists schools of the Renaissance and the French mathematicians of the 17th century.

The session will conclude with a round table, which will expand the discussion to the historical background of the authors mentioned, the Greek sources and authors other works heavily influenced by the receipt of Arithmetica.
