Thematics

This project aims to critically analyze the different concepts introduced into the history and philosophy of science in order to grasp the fact that scientific works are always carried out within specific "local cultures".

In this context, we have paid particular attention to the concept of "epistemological culture", which E. Fox Keller introduced in Making sense of life to account for the differences between distinct human collectives in the ways of The same subject - in his case, the biology of development. E. Fox Keller sought, in this way, to analyze certain difficulties in exchanging between themselves that groups of different scientists encounter, despite the fact that they share the same subject. It acknowledged that these collectives evolved in "different subcultures", in a sense of expression that was becoming classical : they were distinguished by the experimental systems developed, the instruments used, the Techniques used, in short, by their local practices. But E. Fox Keller insisted on a new point, for which she added the term "epistemological" to the term culture : at least as importantly, these collectives did not share the same "epistemic needs". And it invited historians and philosophers of science to examine the variations in the epistemological dimensions that characterize a given milieu and without which one can not account for the specificities in their way of doing science.

By carrying out collective research on the value of generality, it is precisely by the epistemological aspects that we have chosen to enter into the description of collective working cultures-a project to which we are working more widely. Once this operation has been completed, we extend this research by concentrating on abstraction, more specifically within the framework of mathematics, and, to a lesser extent, on simplicity.

We have also carried out a critical work on the concepts introduced in the history and philosophy of science over the past decades in order to grasp how human collectives carry out their scientific activities in a specific way (styles, styles of thought or reasoning, epistemic cultures, Epistemological cultures ...). In this vein, we also found it useful to launch a collective and critical discussion of how historians and philosophers of science understand the term "practical "when they say they want to give importance to the activity and not just to the results of the science practitioners. These reflections are developed in the context of the ERC project "which must be based on the ERC project" Mathematical sciences in the ancient world All these theoretical works on scientific practices and cultures in order to achieve its primary objective : the identification of distinct scholarly practices and cultures within what historiography has given as homogeneous omnipotences, namely : Chinese mathematics "," Indian mathematics "and Mesopotamian mathematics". If this is indeed the final objective of the program, we are convinced of the need, in order to realize it, to conduct a theoretical work on the whole of the field of history and the philosophy of science. These concepts essential for our company.
