CONTEXT
In January 2018, France and the UK have announced enhanced cooperation between Genomics England and the French ‘Médecine Génomique 2025’ project. Both Nations are committed to international leadership in the development of genomic medicine. Their joint vision is to deliver a global leading 21st Century genomic medicine service by ‘combining the attributes and research endeavour of both Nations and their respective research and healthcare infrastructure’. The successful achievement of this aim requires the development of common approaches, not only to standardisation of the new technologies, but also to ethical standards in research and practice.
Side by side with scientific progress and the clinical application of genomic medicine, ethical and social issues need to be identified and analysed in both countries in order to understand their socio-cultural and normative underpinnings. In-depth understanding of similarities of and differences between the ethical and social issues in each country will allow developing ethical standards that address actual problems and that are adapted to each context.
This Network aims to bring together researchers from both the UK and France in order to reflect on ethical and social questions of genomic technologies and their application. A series of workshops will allow identifying relevant issues and offer a better understanding on how these issues arise in their respective contexts, and show ways of how to address them in practice. The Network will provide a platform where researchers can exchange, learn from each other’s experience and establish collaborations for bigger grant applications on the topics identified. Each workshop will generate joint publications, a special issue or a collected edition.
