To other volumes

The twelfth volume of Natural History, General and Particular, dated 1764, again deals with a series of various exotic quadrupeds, from zebra to porcupine, passing through all sorts of gazelles and other lesser species. known or even totally new, such as "urson" or "tendrac". As in the preceding volumes, Buffon exposes the "story" of each animal, occasionally engaging in general reflections, while Daubenton is in charge of the anatomical description and the catalog of the corresponding objects preserved in the Royal Cabinet. The volume opens with the "Première Vue de la Nature", a curious text, a piece of literary bravery, perhaps destined to satisfy an unsuspecting public a little tired of zoological monographs. Buffon deploys his most brilliant style to paint a general picture of the universe, leaving the reader free to interpret his thinking in a providential sense, while reaffirming without concession his main ideas about nature and science.

Stéphane Schmitt is research director at the CNRS (UMR 7219, Paris). His research focuses on the history of life sciences from the 18th to the 20th century, particularly on the development of anatomy and embryology in relation to the rise of the theories of evolution.

Cédric Crémière, curator in chief of the inheritance and director of the Museum of Natural History of Le Havre, is particularly interested in the history of anatomy and collections.
