Charles T. Wolfe is Research Fellow, Sarton Centre for History of Science & Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences, Ghent University and associated researcher with the IHPST.
He works on the relationship between the philosophy of the classical age (17th-18th centuries) and the history and philosophy of life sciences, with a particular interest in materialism, notions of mechanism and organism, and vitalism. Second last but one : Materialism : A Historico-Philosophical Introduction (2015) ; he was editing the following volumes : Monsters and Philosophy (2005) ; Vitalism without Metaphysics ? (special issue of Science in Context, 2008) ; The body as object and instrument of knowledge. Embodied empiricism in early modern science (co- O. Gal, 2010) ; The Concept of Organism (av. P. Huneman, numéro special de HPLS, 2010) ; Vitalism and the scientific image, 1800-2010 (co- S. Normandin, 2013), and Brain Theory (2014), and published in revues such as Bulletin de la SHESVIE, Dix-huitième siècle, Early Science and Medicine, Gesnerus, Journal of the History of Biology, Perspectives on Science, Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology, Recherches sur Diderot et l’Encyclopédie, and Studies in History and Philosophy of Biology and the Biomedical Sciences. He is currently working on a monograph on the conceptual foundations of Montpellier’s vitalism. On the editorial side, he co-directs the serie History, Philosophy and Theory of the Life Sciences, Springer.
