Thematics

Logic was considered in the Aristotelian tradition as an instrumental discipline ; It was nonetheless an area of learning in its own right. The work of this sub-axis aims to study this discipline in this double aspect and taking into account the specific developments that it experienced in the Greek, Arabic, Hebraic and medieval Latin traditions. Concerning logic as a domain, the following objects of study are favored : the evolution of the syllogistic, the re-elaboration of the topology in its heuristic role, the integration of rhetoric as part of the Aristotelian Organon and the dominant position accorded To the theory of demonstration. As far as logic as an instrument is concerned, one examines the use that the "real" disciplines (physics, metaphysics ...) have made of these tools and in particular of the theory of the demonstration being attentive to the effects in return of such use.
