Axis History of Philosophy from Ancient to Modern Age

1 Logic & demonstration

Thematics of research / Seminar / Members / 2018–2022

Logic was considered in the Aristotelian tradition as an instrumental discipline; it nonetheless constituted a field of learning in its own right. The work of this sub-axis aims to study this discipline under this dual aspect and taking into account the specific developments that it has known in the Greek, Arabic, Hebrew and medieval Latin traditions. Concerning logic as a domain, the following objects of study are favored: the evolution of syllogistics, the re-elaboration of the topical in its heuristic role, rhetoric as part of the Aristotelian Organon and the theory of demonstration. With regard to logic as an instrument, we examine the use that "real" disciplines (physics, metaphysics, etc.) have made of these tools and in particular of the theory of the demonstration by being attentive to the effects in return such use.
