This presentation aims at those who are interested in the history and philosophy of science, and/or in scientific research and the engineering sciences. An outline of the attached article (see reference below*) will be presented — yet, this presentation aims to be interactive, open to questions and points of discussion of both philosophers and scientific researchers.


The idea that scientific concepts are epistemic tools will be discussed. Scientific concepts as epistemic tools means to say that those concepts are ’tools’ for thinking, such as asking research questions, formulating hypotheses, etc. Philosophical questions are then 1) how such scientific concepts are produced and justified, and 2) how it is possible that concepts can function as epistemic tools.


Mieke Boon est professeur de philosophie des sciences au sein du département de philosophie de l’université de Twente (Pays-Bas) orienté vers le développement de la philosophie de la technologie. Elle occupe la chaire de "Philosophie des sciences en pratique" (Philosophy of Science in Practice).
Mieke Boon possède un PhD de biotechnologie de l’université technique de Delft et ses recherches se sont longtemps situées dans le domaine des sciences de l’ingénieur. Ses centres d’intérêt en philosophie portent sur la recherche scientifique considérés du point de vue de ses applications techniques. De 2003 à 2008, ses travaux portant sur le développement d’une philosophie des sciences pour les sciences de l’ingénieur ont été financés par la Fondation scientifique nationale néerlandaise (NWO vidi grant). Elle est l’un des membres fondateurs de la Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice (SPSP), dont elle fait partie du bureau.
