Ibn al-Haytham. L’émergence de la modernité classique

Roshdi Rashed

"With Galileo, Descartes, Fermat, Huygens, the world of science is witnessing the beginning of classical modernity of the seventeenth and seventeenth centuries. However, it began long before, in mathematics, optics, astronomy and the philosophy of mathematics.

One of the main players is Ibn al-Haytham (by his Latin name, Alhazen, who died after 1040). His work in Arabic, translated into Latin, was widely known and widely cited. While it is possible to read some valuable studies of Ibn al-Haytham’s perspective today, there is no book devoted to all of his writings in mathematics, science, and philosophy. This is precisely the point of this book: to systematically study the scientific methods and theories of Ibn al-Haytham to show that, in more than one field, they prelude to classical modernity."

Roshdi Rashed is Research Director Emeritus at the National Center for Scientific Research and Honorary Professor at the University of Tokyo. His main publications focus on the history of Greek, Arabic and classical mathematics, as well as their applications to the natural and social sciences.
