What Mathematics comes out of the Problem of Time in Quantum Gravity?

Demanding background independence leads to a nine-faceted problem concerning discrepancies between the time concept in Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity. I outline seven of these facets, pointing out a few unresolved local problems: the GR thin sandwich, the problem of observables/beables in gravitational theory, the extent of the departure from Lie algebras within the Dirac procedure. I also point out a few working results: generalization of thin sandwich, timeless reformulation of the entirety of the principles of dynamics, refoliation invariance, classical reconstruction of spacetime from space, two new classes of reducible models. The eighth facet is the global aspects. These are numerous, and a number are new or have not seen any progress since they were first pointed out 20 to 30 years ago by Isham. At best, I talk about how to classify these. Isham saw how far he could get quantizing many different layers of mathematical structure; I comment on a few of his choices and encourage further work on quantizing stratified manifolds in particular. There will probably not be space to discuss the last facet (multiple choice problem, known to some as "Gronewold-van Hove phenomenon").
